Yesterday, images appeared on social media showed one of Philadelphia’s more unusual landmarks had fallen into a state of disrepair. Here, the iconic Shrek Box was covered in graffiti, rust, and also its letters had began to peel off.

This is in stark contrast to its previous appearance which showed it to be much more vibrant. As a result, some Philadelphians even claimed that they would soon fix the box and try to restore it to its former glory. Despite its neglect, the image below shows that the insides still remain fairly in touch, with a Shrek DVD and other paraphernalia adorning its interior.

Located at 20 S 8th St, the Shrek Box in South Philadelphia is a popular street art mural featuring the character Shrek from the DreamWorks animated film series. It’s a colorful and whimsical piece that has become a local landmark and a popular spot for photos proving that in modern times, memes can transcend the internet and become physical objects too.

While this may not exactly rival the iconic Rocky statue that is one of the city’s main movie icons for obvious reasons, this also shows that the green giant has a clear place in the heart of the locals.
