Yesterday, a sign photographed in Longbrook Park divided the attention of Connecticut reasons. The sign was posted on social media nearby the Longbrook Park pond and read: ‘Fishing regulations for Brewster Pond. 1 Catch and release fishing only. 2 Only individuals under 16 years of age, over 62 years of age or disabled may fish in this pond. Per Stratford town code chapter 152 Section 14.’
For obvious reasons, this sign did not go down well with certain residents. For those wanting to fish between the ages of 16 and 62, this would technically be illegal at the site.
The photo was originally posted on Reddit by a curious local. Here, one user claimed it was age discrimination, while another argued ‘I love living in a state that makes sure that old and young folks have good access to natural resources and activities. It’s just great across the board for keeping young people busy and interested, and keeping old folks happy and occupied. It’s compassionate and I love it.’
With this being said, many of the users agreed that this was a good idea as it preserved the dignity of the park and nearby wildlife. However, as is often the case with rules and regulations, sometimes it can be viewed as too authoritarian. Regardless, this may be one of the reasons why you wont see many fishermen in Longbrook Park.
